EN 397 vs EN 12492: Which Safety Helmet?

How industrial and mountaineering helmet standards differ, and which one your site actually requires.

Short answer: EN 397 is the industrial safety helmet standard for falling-object protection, and its chin strap must release at 150–250 N so the helmet detaches if snagged. EN 12492 is the mountaineering standard, and its chin strap must hold at least 500 N so the helmet stays on during a fall. Use EN 397 for construction and general industry; use EN 12492 for work at height, rope access and confined-space entry.

The Chin Strap Is the Real Difference

Both standards cover shock absorption and penetration, so buyers often treat the two as interchangeable. They are not, and the reason is a deliberate design conflict in the retention system.

An EN 397 helmet is designed to come off. If the shell is caught by moving machinery or a rotating shaft, a strap that held firm would drag the wearer with it, so the standard requires the chin strap to release between 150 N and 250 N. An EN 12492 helmet is designed to stay on. In a fall or a slip on a structure, losing the helmet before impact defeats its purpose, so the strap must withstand at least 500 N without releasing.

Choosing the wrong one introduces the exact hazard the other standard was written to prevent.

The other structural difference is impact coverage. EN 397 tests the crown only, on the assumption that the danger comes from above. EN 12492 also tests the front, back and sides, because a worker who falls or swings on a rope can strike a structure from any angle.

Optional EN 397 Markings Worth Specifying

  • -30°C or -20°C — impact and penetration performance verified at low temperature, for cold storage and winter outdoor work.
  • +150°C — performance verified at elevated temperature, for foundries and hot processes.
  • 440 V a.c. — the shell resists accidental short-term contact with live conductors up to 440 volts. This is not the same as electrical insulation.
  • LD — lateral deformation resistance, for confined spaces where a helmet could be crushed sideways.
  • MM — resistance to molten metal splash, for welding and casting environments.

Where EN 50365 Fits

The 440 V marking under EN 397 covers accidental brief contact only. For live-line work, the relevant standard is EN 50365, which certifies electrically insulating helmets for use on installations up to 1000 V a.c. If your buyers work on energised systems, specify EN 50365 explicitly — a 440 V marked helmet does not satisfy that requirement.

Bump Caps Are Not Safety Helmets

EN 812 bump caps protect against striking the head on a stationary object such as a low beam or pipework. They are not tested for falling objects and must never be substituted for an EN 397 helmet where overhead hazards exist. They are appropriate in logistics, maintenance access and food processing where headroom, not falling material, is the risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one helmet be certified to both EN 397 and EN 12492?

A single chin strap cannot both release at 250 N and hold at 500 N, so a helmet cannot meet both retention requirements at once. Some manufacturers offer dual-certified helmets with an interchangeable or switchable chin strap system, where the certification that applies depends on the strap fitted. Ask for the test report covering the exact configuration you intend to supply.

When should a safety helmet be replaced?

Immediately after any significant impact, even with no visible damage, because the shell and harness absorb energy by deforming. Otherwise, follow the manufacturer’s stated service life, and inspect for cracks, chalky surfaces, brittleness and harness wear. UV exposure degrades thermoplastic shells over time, so outdoor helmets age faster than indoor ones.

Does helmet colour have a standard meaning?

No. Colour coding for trades or roles is a site or company convention, not a requirement of EN 397 or EN 12492. It varies by country and by contractor, so confirm the scheme with the end user before producing a coloured order.
