Short answer: EN 149 classifies filtering facepiece respirators by minimum filtration efficiency — FFP1 filters at least 80%, FFP2 at least 94% and FFP3 at least 99%. The class also sets a maximum total inward leakage, which is why fit matters as much as the filter. FFP2 is the common choice for general dust and construction work; FFP3 is required for finer or more harmful particles such as asbestos and hardwood dust.

The Three Classes Compared

Note that the leakage figures fall much faster than the filter figures. Moving from FFP1 to FFP3 improves filtration from 80% to 99%, but it reduces permitted leakage from 22% to 2%. In practice this means the seal against the face, not the filter media, is what separates the classes in real use.

The Suffixes: NR, R and D

  • NR — non-reusable. The respirator is limited to a single shift and must be discarded afterwards.
  • R — reusable. The respirator has passed additional testing that permits use over more than one shift, subject to the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.
  • D — dolomite clogging test passed. The respirator maintains acceptable breathing resistance after exposure to dolomite dust. D is mandatory for R-marked models and optional for NR models, and it is a good indicator of comfort during long dusty shifts.

A marking such as FFP2 NR D therefore reads: 94% minimum filtration, single shift only, clogging test passed.

Valved and Unvalved Models

An exhalation valve reduces heat and moisture build-up inside the facepiece, which makes long wear more tolerable and reduces eyewear fogging. The valve does not affect the wearer’s protection class, because it only opens on exhalation.

It does, however, release unfiltered exhaled air. Valved respirators are therefore unsuitable in sterile environments, in food handling where product contamination is a concern, and wherever source control matters. If in doubt for those applications, specify unvalved.

FFP2, KN95 and N95 sit in a similar performance band but they are certified under different regulations, with different test aerosols, different flow rates and different leakage requirements. They are not legally interchangeable. Supplying an N95 into a market that requires CE-marked FFP2 is a compliance failure even though the filtration figures look comparable, so confirm which certification the destination market requires before ordering.

When a Disposable Respirator Is Not Enough

Filtering facepieces protect against particles only. They offer no protection against gases and vapours. Where solvents, paints or chemical vapours are present, the correct equipment is a reusable half mask to EN 140 or a full face mask to EN 136, fitted with gas filters certified to EN 14387 and selected for the specific chemical group. A full face mask also protects the eyes, which matters for irritant vapours.

Does facial hair affect respirator performance?

Yes, significantly. Any hair crossing the sealing surface prevents a reliable seal, and the resulting leakage can exceed the class limit regardless of the filter rating. Workers who cannot be clean-shaven should be issued a loose-fitting powered air-purifying respirator instead, which does not rely on a face seal.

How long can an FFP respirator be worn?

An NR-marked respirator is limited to one shift and must then be discarded. Beyond that limit, replace it sooner if breathing resistance becomes noticeable, if it becomes damp or soiled, or if it is removed and the seal is broken. Increased breathing effort indicates the filter is loading and the respirator has reached the end of useful life.

Is fit testing required?

Fit testing is required by occupational health regulations in many jurisdictions for tight-fitting respirators, and it is good practice everywhere. Face shapes vary, and a model that seals well on one worker may leak on another, so stocking more than one shape or size is usually necessary for a mixed workforce.
